【Recovering MP by Sleeping Together!?】 What Are the Pros and Cons of VR Sleep? Why Do People Sleep with Heavy Headsets on in VRChat?

Have you heard phrases like “Let’s recover MP by sleeping together in VR!”?

HineriHineri

Hi zzz, this is Hineri!

Today I’ll be covering “VR Sleep,” a unique cultural phenomenon in the Japanese VRChat community! As someone who occasionally does VR sleep myself, I’ll be discussing:

What is VR Sleep?
What you gain and lose from VR sleeping
What’s VR sleep really like? I asked different people about it.
Special VR sleep pillows??

I hope you’ll stick around until the end as I share various aspects of this fascinating topic!

What is VR Sleep?

While this culture is well-known among Japanese VR users, when I first heard about sleeping with a headset on, I honestly thought

HineriHineri

“Are they serious? Who would sleep with such a heavy headset? Is this some kind of punishment game?”

The truth is, VR sleep isn’t for everyone – some people just can’t handle it. While I couldn’t do it at first either, I gradually got used to it.

VR sleep simply refers to the act of sleeping while wearing a VR headset. Whether you’re sleeping alone or with someone else in VR, it still counts as VR sleep.

HineriHineri

When you sleep in VR, it’s called “V-sui” (V-Sleep), and when you sleep normally in “Real”life without VR, it’s called “Re-sui” (Re-Sleep).

What you gain and lose from VR sleeping

When doing VR sleep, there are things you gain and lose. Of course, everyone’s experience is different, so some of you might want to disagree with me lol! If that’s the case, feel free to let me know in the replies!!

Let me start with what you lose from VR sleep:

HineriHineri

Obviously, your electricity bill is going to go up lol!

Of course, that’s obvious! Your electricity bill goes up since you often need to keep your PC running and lights on while sleeping to prevent tracking issues.

Plus, since the PC generates heat, you might need to use more AC in summer, which means your power costs will definitely take a big hit lol!

HineriHineri

By the way, there are surprisingly many people who can’t get a good night’s sleep.

Obviously, most people can’t get a good deep sleep with such a heavy headset on. If you’re not used to it or have trouble sleeping deeply with VR, it’s recommended to do VR sleep on days when you don’t have work the next day.

HineriHineri

On the other hand, I sometimes do VR sleep when I want to take a short nap.

Let me tell you about what you gain from VR sleep.

Mental healing and MP recovery!

Sleeping next to cute anime girl avatars really helps you fall asleep happy and wake up feeling good.

HineriHineri

I feel lonely sleeping alone, I want to sleep with someone.

VR sleep is highly recommended in these situations!

While it’s said that VR sleep doesn’t restore your HP (physical health) but does restore your MP (mental points),

I think the main benefit is really just the healing effect of sleeping next to friends or special someone. There are some rare people who say they can’t get a good night’s sleep without wearing a headset, which I find pretty amazing.

HineriHineri

In this stressful modern society, we definitely need some healing!!!

Recommended worlds for VR sleep

Let me introduce some lesser-known but personally recommended VR sleep worlds, aside from the super popular ones like SuRoom.

Ohirune-Oasis

Click here for the world link.

Let me introduce you to 7 different spots that are perfect for naps rather than full VR sleep. These places are great for taking light naps or short rests!!

Kumahouse

Click here for the world link.

It’s a world where you can enjoy VR sleep like you’re in a planetarium!! The room is quite spacious, and particles move along with the music, creating a beautiful atmosphere to enjoy.

Japan Rainy Day(quest compatible)

Click here for the world link.

It’s quite a well-known VR sleep world among Quest-compatible worlds. I often sleep here myself. The standard instance has pretty much everything you need. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong sleeping here!!

STAR T HOME [CozyHOME(Quest)]

Click here for the world link.

There’s a rooftop open-air bath and the world is well-equipped with mirrors. Plus, it’s great that it’s Quest compatible!!

Hotel Virlian 2․0

Click here for the world link.

It’s like a love hotel world. It’s a luxurious world with an elegant atmosphere. I recommend using this when sleeping with someone special!!

Lunar Serenity

Click here for the world link.

The curtains can be closed which makes it super stylish!! It’s a VR sleep world designed for two people. It has a top mirror, great night mode features, and even a video player.

S-Room

My favorite S-Room. I love how incredibly atmospheric it is when you first enter the instance – the way it transitions from a dark, mosaic-like world to a bright one is just perfect.

The bed can fit about 3-4 people, so it’s possible to do VR sleep with multiple people. It also has features like a top mirror and night mode.

As another tip for world selection

HineriHineri

If you want people to leave wake-up messages for you, or if you have friends who only use Quest, I recommend sleeping in Quest-compatible worlds!

Basically, you can do VR sleep anywhere as long as there’s a top mirror!! If you find a nice spot but there’s no top mirror,

try using this method to bring one up!! Then you can sleep anywhere, anytime!!

Want to try VR sleep but don’t want to sleep alone… and no friends available to sleep with today…Then VR sleep matching is recommended!! It’s a matching room where you can find someone to sleep together with.

Tag markers are available so you can match with others based on your preferences.

For reference, this is how I set mine up. This way, people can tell without conversation that I want to sleep in a home-style world for two people, with a ceiling mirror in a dark space. Also, when someone approaches you while having these tags, they’re likely to agree with these preferences, which makes it easier for both people to match up.

Of course, there are sleeping spaces and beds in the VR sleep matching area. If you see someone with tags like “feel free to sleep next to me,” you can go ahead and sleep beside them. While I personally think it’s best to sleep with friends or someone special, meeting new people can be nice too, so why not give it a try?

What’s VR sleep really like? I asked different people about it.

I asked different people about their experience with VR sleep, so let me share what they said.

Friend A: “I can’t get deep sleep, but I keep doing it because it makes me feel happy.”

Friend B: “My body has become so used to sleeping with the headset that I can’t sleep without it when I’m away from home…..”

Friend C: “I can’t get proper sleep, but when friends ask me to sleep together, I try my best to do VR sleep, though I still don’t feel rested…..”

Friend D: “I do VR sleep every day!!” with determination

These are the kind of responses I often get.but…

HineriHineri

Take off your headset and get proper sleep lol!

Basically, VR sleep tends to make it harder to get good, restful sleep…. I personally don’t recommend it, and I only do it on days when I don’t have work the next day or when it’s okay if I can’t wake up…. Even then, I try not to do it much since I’m not good at it…..

I think of it as sacrificing HP to recover MP…. However, with the right pillow, you might be able to recover HP too!! Let’s try to get comfortable VR sleep that restores both HP and MP by choosing the right pillow!!

Finally

I think pillows are really important for VR sleep. While I personally use a super cheap pillow, I think investing in a custom-made pillow like Jibun Makura might be worth considering.

I actually have friends who work regular jobs who say they can get deep sleep using Jibun Makura.

Link to Jibun Makura’s sales page

Of course it’s expensive since it’s completely custom-made lol! But honestly, after I switched to a pillow that cost around 8,000 yen, my sleep quality has definitely improved.

I’m interested in trying out VR sleep-specific pillows, so when I get my paycheck and my finances are in good shape, I’d like to review one!!
